The Twin Rivers 9 km Adventure on the Picton and Huon Rivers has been a classic Hobart river trip for generations. The river flows out of the pristine Tasmanian World Heritage through tall eucalypt forest with rapids to grade three. Suitable for most weathers and most water levels this is a trip for the whole family. This trip needs a bit more water in the rivers so we will target the cooler months to give you the best experience.
We will meet you at the Tahune Adventure Site where we will get dressed into rafting gear and travel up the Picton Valley to the start of the trip.
From the 'Top Bridge' we raft down the Picton River, including the section used on the Twin Rivers 4 km Adventure back to the Tahune Adventure Site. Features on the way include 'The Gorge', Huon Pine Trees and interpretation of the huge surrounding Eucalyptus Regnans forests. We will pause for brief river snacks along the way and later enjoy lunch (not included) at the Tahune Cafe. The Twin Rivers 9 km Adventure 4 1/2 hours return to Tahune.
Depending on the water flow the Picton River can deliver rapids to grade three. This section of River is fun at any level. In normal moderate flows it has grade one & two rapids and at levels over 1 metre this increases to grade three. At low summer levels this trip may be changed to an alternate 6 km trip on the Huon River starting in the World Heritage Area. Contact us with any questions you may have about water levels or river gradings.

Your rafting experience changes with the river level and the weather. The beauty of the river is that it's never the same twice! To give you an idea of what you can expect when you are coming to raft with us, explore the levels below. Huon River levels can be found at:
The river can rise quickly after rain in its large catchment so todays level is only a guide for tomorrow's.
0.2 – 0.6
An ideal level for those wanting an active, fun trip with plenty of opportunity to explore under the Huon pines, play in waves and go with the flow. This is a great river level for those wanting to have an enjoyable trip down river that also has the challenge of following your guide around obstacles as you lose yourself in the magic of the river. At this level it is safe for you to be captain of your 2 person raft as your guides help you down the river. At these lower flows expectg to be in a small two person raft. With assistance from our guides you choose your own path down the river.
At this level we will probably take the bigger rafts to ensure we all get down the river safely. Enjoy easy rapids and a relaxing and serene trip, as the flow of the river carries you through the forest. Or if you want to get wet, you can enjoy splash fights and playing in the current and waves. This is perfect for those that wish to explore and relax while having tales spun by your guide on the natural history of the region and the early pioneers that made this place their home.
Now things are getting fun. Great rapids, lots of excitement.
Plenty of action, big surfing waves. This is going to be a quick trip!
It is important to be prepared for this trip so that you can make the most of it.

Q: How long does it take to get from Hobart to Tahune Adventures?
A: Allow ninety minutes drive from Hobart. Take your time on Tasmanian roads as there are often animals out, other travellers and plenty to see. Take care following Google as it will get you lost on locked Forestry roads. Take the Huon Highway to Geeveston and then follow the signs to Tahune. Stay on the bitumen.
Q: How old do you have to be to go rafting?
A: For the Picton River Classic we have a minimum age of 10 years. The water can be cold and some stamina is required to ensure you enjoy the day.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: See the information page to answer questions on equipment. If you have any further questions please feel free to call 0409 664268
Q: Do you still raft in the rain?
A: Absolutely!! We love the rain – not only does it bring water to the river, but it also creates beautiful colours and sounds to enjoy as you float through the forest. We also provide plenty of warm clothes, wetsuits and a hot drink to keep you going through the journey.
Q: How fit do I need to be?
A: We recommend a reasonable level of fitness for this tour, particularly in lower water levels as you may need to be a little more active in manoeuvring your raft or pushing off rocks. With higher water levels the river does more of the work.
Q: I have a joint problem (knee, shoulder, etc), is this going to be an issue?
A: This is always going to be treated on a case-by-case basis, but in general isn't a limiting factor. Your guides will work with you to make sure you enjoy the experience. If you're not sure, give us a call and we can help to assess your particular situation.
Q: Is this whitewater rafting?
A: Yes. The Picton River has been a favourite for Hobart enthusiasts for years. Depending on the water level rapids are up to grade three and the forest scenery is stunning.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Bring a change of clothes and a towel. We supply your river clothes but if you have an extra westsuit or thermal to help keep you warm - great. Worried about the cold? We provide wetsuits, warm layers and a splash top to keep you toasty. If you have a medical condition (asthma, anaphylaxis, heart condition etc) please bring your medication and let your trip leader know before the trip starts.
Q: Is it okay to bring a camera on the trip?
A: If your camera is waterproof, bring it along to capture images of iconic Tasmanian river views, framed by the famous trees of the region. Remember to share your pictures on the King River Rafting Facebook page. We love to see shots of our happy guests.
Q: How long does this trip take?
A: The Twin Rivers Adventure takes about 4 hours from when you meet your guides, to arriving at the take-out. This includes a briefing, time to get kitted out in your rafting equipment, transport to the river, a snack and drink break mid-trip, as well as the fun of making your way downriver. You’ll probably be on the rivers for about 2.5 hours. This time is a guide only and is dependent on river levels, weather conditions and how many locals we meet on the way.
Q: What is included in the snack on the tour?
A: We will stop at a convenient spot for a snack comprising a hot drink and a light snack. Dietary options are available, so let us know when you make your booking and we can accommodate most dietary needs. We finish the trip at the Tahune Cafe for some well deserved apres rafting celebration.
Q: Are there change rooms? And what do I do with my valuables while rafting?
A: Change rooms and lockers are provided although we recommended that you leave your valuables secured in your vehicle. Don't forget to bring a change of clothes and towel.
